LIFE SAFETY COMMITTEE
MARCH
21, 2007
Call
to Order: The Life Safety Committee was called to order by Gene Meyers at 7:25
PM.

Call: Present: Adele Benk, Mike McElroy, Fenwick Taylor, Gene Meyers
Absent:
Sue Cascio, Terese Cislak
Review
of Minutes: No minutes were available for the previous meeting.
Unfinished
Business: The letter to Senator Obama and the response letter from Doug Scott
(Illinois
EPA administrator) were discussed. Doug Scott was invited to
visit
the site with us.
A
review of the lease / title to the property with the ACE was discussed.
Joan
Silke of the Good Neighbor Committee of South Cook County
discussed
the possibility of joint efforts with the Great Lake Michigan
Alliance
to designate the pit area a wetlands. The GNCSCC voted
unanimously
to recommend designation of the area as a wetlands.
New
Business: A discussion was held about the pending legislation before Congress
to
ease
the restrictions on MWRD’s control of the property leases.
Concern
over the politicians’ motives was discussed and Adele will have a
sit-down
with Mayor Guzdziol to check the status.
This
led to the motion to establish the purpose of the Committee: Gene
Meyers
made the motion: “The primary purpose of this committee is to
maintain
the environmental integrity of the Lucas Berg Pit area even to the
extent
of designating it or a part of it as a wetlands.” Seconded by Adele
Benck
, Ayes 4, Nays 0, Motion carried.
The
committee will be pursuing methods of getting photographs of the
vegetation
and elements necessary to determine the qualification of
wetland
areas.
