LUCAS-BERG
PIT
CALL TO ACTION
SIGN UP NOW!
There
will be a hearing, maybe this fall. It
all depends on when funding comes through from the Federal
Government.
We
have been told, if you express your concerns at a public hearing
it can cause the Army Corps to re-think the plan to put these
grossly polluted canal dredgings into Lucas-Berg Pit. A large number of people would make the hearing
successful.
OBJECTIONS TO THE
DREDGING OPERATION
1.
In some cases property values would be lowered.
2.
Dust may be prevalent in the air.
3.
Worthwoods School is across 111th Street from the pit in the path
of prevailing Southwest winds and our children may be exposed to effects from
the polluted dredgings.
4.
An oily odor could prevail.
5.
Pumping may create noise.
6.
Future economic development on the pit property could be hampered.
7.
Citizens who utilize wells for water (Worth, Palos Park and Orland Park) may
find their water affected by contaminants.
8.
Due to a much higher population density around the pit and a more thorough
understanding of the effects from exposure to certain contaminants that may
be prevalent in the pit the original plan from the 1970’s may be not suitable.
For
ongoing information, the Life Safety Committee holds meetings
at the Worth Village Hall. See newspapers for meeting dates, the cable
community access channel, and the sign in front of Village
Hall. The 3rd Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
each month is reserved for us.

I
will commit to supporting an effort to get the Army Corps to
abandon the use of Lucas-Berg Pit at 111th and Southwest
Highway for canal dredgings based on at least 8 criteria making
its use risky to our quality of life and maintaining our high
property values. I will come to a public hearing.
